Golf and Track - a Busy Season!

With 2 kids in golf and another one in JH track, we had a busy spring!  Delaney learned that she loves track, thriving on the personal challenge of getting better each week. She competed in the same 3 events at each meet: HJ, 100 M Hurdles, and the Medley Relay. PRs included: 4'0" in HJ and 18.18 seconds in the hurdles. That time actually broke Jenna's week-old school record for one week! The following week, Jenna took it back. It was fun to watch them challenge each other!  Other highlights from the season came at the league track meet - 2nd in the hurdles, 3rd in HJ, and 1st in the Medley relay. The 6th7th grade girls finished in first place, making them league champions!

One of Delaney's first-ever attempts at HJ!

Looks like a good handoff to Isabelle

Cambry enjoyed her season of golf, competing in 3 meets. There was supposed to be a 4th one, but it was cancelled due to weather. She improved a great deal this year, and even came in 4th at one of the scramble tournaments with her partner, Luke, at Papa's golf course!   We were grateful for the fun she had with the other girls!

4th place with Luke (Chevy was 1st at that meet)

Good times with Coach Lindeman

Caiden finished his high school golf career on a high note! Individually, he placed FIRST at two golf meets, he was the league runner-up, the team finished 1st or 2nd at every meet (except regionals and state), they were Wheat State League Champions, and they made it to the state golf meet as a team this year!

The state meet was at Hesston on May 23, 2022 - a course that Caiden is very familiar with! It was supposed to be a 2-day tournament, but because of rain, the 2nd day was cancelled. So, after the first day, the team finished in 6th place (good enough to advance to the 2nd day), and Caiden was in 20th - just sneaking in for a medal! His front 9 was amazing (until the 9th hole), and then his back 9 just couldn't match it. He had high hopes of doing better than a 91, and he feels like a 2nd day would have helped him move up...but that's golf! There are good rounds and not-so-good rounds. We are definitely proud of the work he put into getting himself better over the last 4 years, and we certainly enjoyed all the miles we walked while watching him and the team!

Ready for tee-off at state

State tee-off (he actually teed off twice, but thankfully,
found the first ball, which had hit a moving golf cart and
bounced in-bounds!)

State team: Kyle, Chevy, Caiden, Noah, Jake

Noah - 4th place; Caiden - 20th place

Surprise!

Well, I sure don't get surprised very often, but Saturday night was a huge surprise to me! I thought I was heading to Hesston for an AGCO Christmas Dinner with Chelan. He told me we needed to drop something off at Ben and Tina's house (my cousin), first. Okay, no big deal! While we were there, Ben said they were about ready to go out for dinner, did we want to come along? Surprisingly, Chelan thought about it and wanted to do it (clue #1 that something was up). I kept saying that we couldn't skip out on his dinner, but Chelan insisted that going to Wichita for dinner would be much more fun. I even said, "This seems like something you had planned!" However, I'm always up for dinner in Wichita, so I agreed, reluctantly!! We enjoyed a meal at Hangar 1 Steakhouse and I thought that was the end of it. But, on the way home, Chelan asked if we could go by the new arena since the inaugural concert was there that night -- Brad Paisley! I thought it would be f...

Spring Art

While Mrs. Schmidt was away on maternity leave during the spring, Mr. Novak (from Hesston) filled in for her. Since Cambry has her first 3 class periods in the art room, she got to know him very well and he mentioned several times how he appreciated Cambry's artistic style and way of thinking. He even let her paint a little bit on his own pieces! Cambry took several pieces to the WSL art festival in April. She came home with a first place finish in the graphic design category and an honorable mention in the computer design category. We are so thankful for the instruction she has received over the last 4 years in Goessel. Now, on to Hesston College with Professor Cross!

Choosing Trust Over Fear

I have struggled with writing about the shooting in Hesston - in fact, I wasn't going to post anything about it.  However, for the sake of memories, I decided I should at least touch on it.  It does deserve a place. It just hit so close to home - particularly since Doug was directly involved.  Honestly, I sometimes feel guilty for struggling with this tragedy.  I wasn't there, I didn't lose anyone close to me, and, although I know a few people who work there, I didn't know any of the victims.  And I get to move on with my life with little disruption.  I feel like I am on the outside looking in.   But I guess that's okay.  I didn't have to be directly involved for this to touch me.  My heart is sad for the families of those who died, for those who were injured, for those who witnessed it, for my brother-in-law who will probably replay images over and over, for my sister and my niece and nephew who might sometimes wonder "what if?", for th...
