I Never Thought This Day Would Come . . .

. . . The day I would have to tell Caiden that he would not be able to read before bed and he would be upset!! I don't know what happened - well, I do know. He borrowed one of Ty's Magic Treehouse books! On Sunday night he began reading book #2 (they couldn't find #1) and by Monday evening he had finished it. And, the best part, he actually understands them! I know this because he told me that on Sunday night he couldn't read any further because it was getting a little scary! I'm so proud of him! At the beginning of the year, his teacher told us that she expected them to read at least 10 minutes every evening. Chelan and I thought that would be a piece of cake - we were wrong! It was like pulling teeth to get him to do that. The other night, I wrote down 45 minutes on his reading calendar -- he's come a long way!! Way to go, Bud!

New Windows!

Yeah! We're getting new windows -- along the front of the house, anyway. We've been waiting -- all winter, in fact! It's definitely time to get rid of the old ones when we have to push them down every time we go by! You wouldn't believe the cold air that seeps in! So, today the Voth Construction workers moved in! Delaney slept through the banging and Cambry and I went about our everyday business - coloring, mostly! Though it was a little chilly, we are happy that they are here working! Once they move out, Chelan will begin his work on staining and re-trimming. The project may not feel complete for a while, but that's okay! We'll at least be warmer, (or cooler), depending on when spring decides to finally arrive!

Antibiotics Galore!

After staying out of the dr.'s office ALL winter, we have now frequented the clinic 3times in the last 3 weeks! 1st Visit - Cambry somehow smashed her thumb and it got infected - antibiotics for 10days 2nd Visit - Delaney came down with a double ear infection - antibiotics for 10 days 3rd Visit - Today I took Caiden in for a spot that appeared on his leg. The result? You guessed it - infected! Antibiotics (both oral and topical) for 10 days. In fact, our dr. said it could be the beginnings of MRSA. He made it clear to be very good about washing hands after working with "the spot." Hopefully, this is it for a while. But I do know this: with 3 children, we probably won't get through an entire year without some type of infection for a very long time!

Glorious Day (Living He Loved Me) - Casting Crowns

Have you heard this song? It is my new favorite! Such a powerful message of God's great love and sacrifice for us! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

We Have a 7-Year-Old

Last Friday, Caiden turned 7! Really? We have a 7-year-old? I can't believe it! His birthday usually falls during Spring Break, so he was happy to be home and playing outside. We even met up with some friends in the morning to play at the park. In the evening, we went to my parents' house for supper and to watch the KU game (not that we're big fans of KU, but it is fun to have basketball on all day, isn't it?) He enjoyed himself, but by the end of the evening, it was clear that he had a fever and Delaney was coming down with an ear infection! We were supposed to go to the zoo on Sunday with his friends, but we had to postpone that. Poor guy -- he even had a seating arrangement drawn out for the trip! We're going to try again next weekend. Today, I take birthday treats to school. It seems as though this birthday thing just keeps going and going . . . I've always loved this picture! As a baby, Caiden had such a big smile for everyobody! It's fun t

Learning to Feed a Calf

If you're not interested in watching a calf drink from a bottle, no need to watch the following video. I'm including it for my memory, mostly! This calf needed some extra attention after it was born. It wasn't getting enough milk from it's mother. That means the kids get to feed it a bottle on occasion! I like this video because: 1. The kids are actually working together! 2. The mother cow is very near, keeping tabs on its little one! You can hear her mooing with concern in the video!

Little Explorer

Yesterday was so nice that, while I was pulling weeds, I sat Delaney down on a blanket in the grass. She had a ball exploring the grass around her. She would scrunch the blanket up until she could reach it! Luckily, none of it went in her mouth. It was fun to see her get so excited about something as ordinary as grass!

St. Patrick's Day

How did we celebrate St. Patrick's Day? By planting potatoes, of course!! Caiden is a real pro at using the shovel, and was a big help with the process -- 30 potatoes in all!

A Great Day Outside

We're enjoying spring break this week, and the weather is really cooperating! We enjoyed several things outside today . . . (I have to apologize for the poor quality of photos - I'm taking pictures blindly because I have no view finder left, it cracked! I'm also taking pictures with our video camera which are very grainy!) We burned some of our grasses down -- always a family event! The kids played Firehouse on the squeeze chute -- it's their farmyard playground! We almost saw a new calf being born - I think we missed it by a half hour or so. By the time we got there, it was already up and moving around! I love calving season because you never know when you're going to find a new one! Chelan said there are only 8 more calves to go! Delaney enjoyed her first ride in the swing outside! I think she liked it, at least for a little bit!

It Won't Be Long Now . . .

Yesterday, Delaney turned 7 months old. In the one day that has followed, Delaney went from only lying on her tummy, to scooting backwards on her tummy, to up-on-all-fours and scooting backwards. This little girl will be on the move soon. I suppose I should start babyproofing a little more!

Lent . . .

Lent begins tomorrow. I hadn't really thought about it until this week. Sometimes I give things up, other years, I don't. Lately, I've been struggling to find time to fit in ANY Bible study. I really go back and forth on this because I know I COULD find time. I usually end up with the same excuses like: I have 3 children now, I'm too tired, there's too much else to do (that's a big one for me -- I like to get things done when I have the chance). Last night, I had a brainstorm: During Lent, I'm going to spend 30 minutes each day with my Bible. I'm going to do this at 6:30 a.m. -- half an hour before I usually get up! 6:30 probably doesn't sound early to a lot of you, but I'm definitely not a morning person -- never have been! I guess if you're reading this, you can pray for me that I will have the perseverance to see this through and that I will lean on God for His help. Who knows? Maybe it will carry on beyond Lent!

Two Exciting Things

Two exciting things happened on Thursday: 1. We planted peas in the garden -- in 2 weeks, potatoes go in! 2. I heard frogs -- my favorite sound of spring!

What a Sweetheart!

I don't often get help from the kids without me asking first. Imagine my surprise when, this morning, I came into the living room and saw Cambry folding Delaney's diapers. It warmed my heart!

Dilemma!

Yesterday was quite a day! We started the morning with devotions at breakfast -- pretty normal. The devotional happened to be about taking care of God's creatures. Who knew we'd be putting that into practice in a few hours? I got back from taking Cambry to pre-school and noticed Shammi (our dog) walking towards me. However, there seemed to be something hanging from her abdomen that looked like it should be on the inside, and I could see a cut on her neck. She obviously had gotten into something she shouldn't have. I couldn't bring myself to look closely and I didn't know what to do!! I had no idea if she was dying, if she just had little cuts, but I did know that something had to be done. I called Chelan at work, and he said I'd have to look at it and maybe call the vet to see how much it would cost to repair it. His exact words were, "We're not going to spend $200 on a dog!" While I understand this (we really don't spend money on our
