So Long, 2020!

As the saying goes, hindsight is 20/20.  According to the internet, this expression means:  It's easier to analyze and evaluate situations when we're looking back on them in the past, than when we're in the present moment. Will this hold true?  In 2021, will we look back on this year and see how it made us better, more resilient, more flexible, more understanding?  I hope so!  Even though it was a challenging year, there were plenty of good moments, and I imagine we will understand those better the further away we get from the year 2020.

Our Christmas Letter from this past year:

December 2020

Dear Friends and Family,

What a year!  Despite the difficulties and unexpected moments of this past year, we were able to pick out our ‘top 10’ memories – the good and the bad – from 2020:

10. School suddenly changed last March.  The last 7 weeks were spent learning online.  However, Megan was thankful to still have a job while so many did not have that good fortune.

9. Delaney learned how to create Google Meetings with her friends so they could still see each other while away from school.

8. Caiden golfed nearly every day last spring with friends, even though the season was cancelled – will it pay off this spring?

7. Cambry’s 8th grade promotion was cancelled – twice!  But we still found time to celebrate with a small group of family and friends.

6. Chelan has embraced this year fully, and has rediscovered a love for baking.  Cinnamon rolls, loaves of bread, cookies, and zwieback are all on his weekly menu – usually Sundays.  How lucky are we?

5. Caiden broke a bone in his elbow during the 4th football game of the season. Remarkably, he only missed the first game of the basketball season because of it but now has missed the last 2 basketball games due to being quarantined.  Hopefully, he’ll get to play some games this year!

4. Delaney began playing the French Horn this year.  Her class hasn’t had full band yet, but she enjoys lessons with her best friend once a week.

3. Cambry worked hard on building a porch swing with Chelan for her 4-H woodworking project.  She received grand champion at the Marion Co. Fair!  Covid definitely gave them extra time to work on it.

2. Walking down the driveway to check the mail became one of the girls’ favorite activities last spring.  Little things become exciting when you’re home day after day!

1. Our basement got a makeover – a group project for sure, which involved stripping wallpaper, new drywall, new ceiling, and new lighting.  Without the extra time during quarantine, this may not have happened.

We hope this letter finds you and your family well and you have been able to reflect on your own unique memories from this year.  We continue to trust God’s plan for us in this ever-changing world and have faith that He is with us on our journey.

Blessings to you,

Chelan, Megan, Caiden (16), Cambry (14), Delaney (10)

Surprise!

Well, I sure don't get surprised very often, but Saturday night was a huge surprise to me! I thought I was heading to Hesston for an AGCO Christmas Dinner with Chelan. He told me we needed to drop something off at Ben and Tina's house (my cousin), first. Okay, no big deal! While we were there, Ben said they were about ready to go out for dinner, did we want to come along? Surprisingly, Chelan thought about it and wanted to do it (clue #1 that something was up). I kept saying that we couldn't skip out on his dinner, but Chelan insisted that going to Wichita for dinner would be much more fun. I even said, "This seems like something you had planned!" However, I'm always up for dinner in Wichita, so I agreed, reluctantly!! We enjoyed a meal at Hangar 1 Steakhouse and I thought that was the end of it. But, on the way home, Chelan asked if we could go by the new arena since the inaugural concert was there that night -- Brad Paisley! I thought it would be f...

Choosing Trust Over Fear

I have struggled with writing about the shooting in Hesston - in fact, I wasn't going to post anything about it.  However, for the sake of memories, I decided I should at least touch on it.  It does deserve a place. It just hit so close to home - particularly since Doug was directly involved.  Honestly, I sometimes feel guilty for struggling with this tragedy.  I wasn't there, I didn't lose anyone close to me, and, although I know a few people who work there, I didn't know any of the victims.  And I get to move on with my life with little disruption.  I feel like I am on the outside looking in.   But I guess that's okay.  I didn't have to be directly involved for this to touch me.  My heart is sad for the families of those who died, for those who were injured, for those who witnessed it, for my brother-in-law who will probably replay images over and over, for my sister and my niece and nephew who might sometimes wonder "what if?", for th...

Season: Winter

Here we are, almost at the end of the basketball season, and I haven't updated a thing since fall! We have enjoyed watching Delaney play this year, and it was a big surprise to see her starting the first game of the season. . . and every game after! Their season has had some ups and downs, but one highlight for sure was earning 3rd place at the mid-season Centre tournament! Keep up the good work, Delaney! During Christmas break, I took very few pictures, but we enjoyed a very low-key break at home. At the end of it, we had a giant ice/snowstorm that actually delayed us going back to school for a couple of days! It was Kenya's first snow and it was sure fun to watch her figure it all out! In January, Delaney got her first piece of actual mail from a Division 2 school, inviting her to a volleyball showcase. This felt like a pretty big deal! Cambry has been busy in the art building at Hesston College. She has created several ceramics pieces and enjoyed showing us the other d...
