12 Weeks in School - Can You Believe it?

When the school year began, I didn't know what to expect, and I for sure didn't know whether we would be able to stay IN school for very long.  Actually, we have made it 12 weeks without too much disruption.  There have been students in and out of remote learning because of being close contacts to positive cases, but for the most part, we have been able to have school in a fairly normal fashion.  This could change soon because cases are rising exponentially around our state and the country.  Hospitals are full, and I don't know what that means for the upcoming winter.  If we've learned anything this year, it has that we have to be flexible!

Google Meetings every evening with Quinli, who is quarantined
while her mom recovers from Covid.

Chelan, Caiden, and I made a trip to K-State for a college visit.  It is hard to believe that we are ready for this already!  We had a great day with a great tour guide - thanks, Cale!  We were able to visit the College of Ag.; specifically, the ATM building.  It was a trip down memory lane for Chelan, too, as this was his area during college.

Love the buildings on campus!

We voted early this year - through the mail.  The actual election on Nov. 3 was like no other!  It took nearly 4 days to project a winner, though things seemed to be heading in Joe Biden's direction as mail-in ballots were counted.  The country is pretty divided, but I try to remain hopeful.  And I hope that decency has been restored to the office of president - at least for the next 4 years.  The biggest news from the election, though, was the fact that Kamala Harris was elected as the first female, person of color, and Indian Vice President in our country's history.  What a historic moment - and one I want my girls to remember!

The football team had a fantastic year - winning their region and finishing as runners-up in their section!  It ties for the longest play-off run in our school's history!  Even though Caiden wasn't able to play through the season, it was fun to keep cheering them on. They will remember their double overtime win over Pratt Skyline for a long time!

Before their big win in Pratt, the students had a fun send-off for the team!

We still have one child in the family who enjoys Halloween, so this year, Delaney and her friends planned to trick-or-treat together.  With Covid hanging around, a few of the houses had some pretty ingenious ways to offer candy:  a clothesline at the Stucky house, and a staircase tube at the Guhrs!

Pre-Christmas Surprise

On Dec. 22, I woke up to Caiden not feeling well. In fact, he said he hadn't ever felt the kind of pain he was experiencing that morning. Reluctantly, I made an appointment. Long story, short - it was good he complained because he ended up having his appendix out that afternoon! It must have been at the very beginning stages and thankfully hadn't burst. So, we were in and out of the hospital by midnight that night. Maybe the worst part about the whole thing is that his wisdom teeth surgery had to be postponed since it was supposed to be the very next week. He'll go back to school minus an appendix, but still having his wisdom teeth until February 16! Pre-op Post-op

Spring Art

While Mrs. Schmidt was away on maternity leave during the spring, Mr. Novak (from Hesston) filled in for her. Since Cambry has her first 3 class periods in the art room, she got to know him very well and he mentioned several times how he appreciated Cambry's artistic style and way of thinking. He even let her paint a little bit on his own pieces! Cambry took several pieces to the WSL art festival in April. She came home with a first place finish in the graphic design category and an honorable mention in the computer design category. We are so thankful for the instruction she has received over the last 4 years in Goessel. Now, on to Hesston College with Professor Cross!

July Highlights

July was a slow, meandering stroll through mid-summer. Slow as it was, there were some highlights: Lots of raspberries to pick - what a delight! Kenya continues to grow and learn how to take walks: Delaney loved her week at Camp Menno! Delaney and Jenna attended the KSU Volleyball camp: All 5 of us were in the SAME place at the SAME time to attend a beautiful wedding! Cambry found success at the Marion Co. Fair one last time with 4 purples and 1 red on her photos. Two of those purples turned into a Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion in her respective classes. Fun fact, as an assistant, she sat with her future art professor as he judged photos! Delaney and I were "guest readers" at the little kids' Splish Splash Party at church: Last but not least - the Paris Olympics started! We watched the opening ceremony at Vanessa's. I took an olympic flag fruit pizza to share with everyone: Next up: a busy month of transitions!
