Busy Weeks

After being home and on such a slow schedule for so many months, the busy weeks of school have been a little hard to adjust to!  We forgot what it was like to be constantly on-the-go with school activities, and at the same time, the fall harvest and planting has been in full swing since not having rain for at least 6 weeks - and no chances in sight.

So, what has happened in the 7 weeks since school started?

Denise Voth and I coached these goofy girls through a short season of volleyball.  The team was mostly 5th graders, but we also had a few 4th graders and even one 3rd grader - quite a range of abilities.  I'm quite sure they had a good time!  Delaney spends most evenings outside playing volleyball with the roof (and with me).  It's fun to see her improve and to watch her challenge herself to get better!

Delaney finally got to choose her instrument - the French horn!  Her best friend, Quinli, is also playing French horn, so they ought to enjoy their upcoming band years together.  Band is a little different for 5th grade this year.  They are not meeting as a whole band; instead, they are having section practice sessions once a week.  That means she is practicing quite a bit at home this year!
In disappointing news, Caiden fractured his elbow during the football game vs Attica-Argonia at the end of Sept.  During the same game, Kale Funk blew out his knee, and at the same time Skyler Wuest and Luke Wiens were struggling with concussions.  Initially, we were worried that Caiden's whole year in sports would be over because of a possibility of torn ligaments.  However, an MRI revealed a fracture instead.  This was actually good news because it will heal faster than a ligament. In the x-ray, the little nob at the bottom of the image is cracked on the right side.

sidelines: Caiden, Kale, Luke

On Thursday, Oct. 15, Caiden had surgery to repair the fracture.  It was a long day, but everything went well.  He only has to have the cast on for about 10 days, and then will be fitted for a brace so he can begin moving it.  Hopefully, if basketball season happens, he will be able to join after Christmas break.

Anesthesia didn't agree with his
stomach!

Cambry continued her duties as a volleyball manager.  To be honest, she is not enjoying it, but she is diligent in her filming of the varsity games.  This is her view:
Delaney and I went to Patchwork Farms to pick out some pumpkins.  I love warty pumpkins so much!
Cambry was installed as the 4-H Club's treasurer at the October meeting.  Hopefully, she will embrace this leadership opportunity!

Delaney hosted a pumpkin-carving contest for Cambry and me.  We were each charged with carving whatever slip we pulled out of a bowl - and we could find 2 props to use.  She, of course, was the sole judge!

My witch was declared the winner!

The judge, apparently, was a Hawaiian police officer!

We made it a full 7 weeks at school before 2 positive Covid cases were found in 2 high school students.  So, since Cambry is a close contact in one class, she will have to do school from home for the next 2 weeks.  Caiden lucked out! Since he hadn't been practicing football, he will not have to quarantine as he was never close to the one student.  And so it begins. . .

  1. So glad you are finding some fall fun among all the adversity. Delaney - start working on CRUNCHING when you hit the ball! Your power comes from your strong tummy - not your arms - did you know that?

Pre-Christmas Surprise

On Dec. 22, I woke up to Caiden not feeling well. In fact, he said he hadn't ever felt the kind of pain he was experiencing that morning. Reluctantly, I made an appointment. Long story, short - it was good he complained because he ended up having his appendix out that afternoon! It must have been at the very beginning stages and thankfully hadn't burst. So, we were in and out of the hospital by midnight that night. Maybe the worst part about the whole thing is that his wisdom teeth surgery had to be postponed since it was supposed to be the very next week. He'll go back to school minus an appendix, but still having his wisdom teeth until February 16! Pre-op Post-op

League Champs!!

Delaney and her teammates had an amazing volleyball season! They ended the season undefeated in the Wheat State League, and they only lost 2 matches overall. They had a notable win over Moundridge, 2 wins over Elyria, and THREE wins over Little River - all teams we have had trouble with in the past. They were so fun to watch, working as a team and developing throughout the season, and they ended as the league tournament champs. Thanks to Raechel Boese and Tara Churchill for their work with these ladies. What a fantastic way to end Delaney's middle school volleyball days! Mid-Summer Happenings

I'm trying to remember that I craved "slow and easy" days during the school year, and I feel like that's what I've had this summer. It has been refreshing to wake up in the morning and have a flexible to-do list; although I have to admit that some days do feel long. I suppose that helps me appreciate my teaching job! In not particular order, here's what we've been up to: Endless fixing and revamping in the shop: Digging up potatoes and pulling up a generous onion crop! Look at the size of that potato! The 4th of July fireworks were outdone by the sky this year! Enjoying my walks at sunset: Many, many green beans to can and pickle. Thanks to the girls for cleaning and stemming them! I had been keeping tabs on an Oriole nest near the garden, and one Sunday, I witnessed the "fly-away!" It was a noisy affair as the parents and babies kept calling back and forth. I almost can't get over the fact that I had time to stand and watch the whole affair
