Summer - Week 1

We are still trying to stay home more than usual, but we are also feeling more comfortable running errands and enjoying time with friends - all of which happened this week!  In fact, Delaney even went over to Jenna's house for one afternoon to play.  And they stayed outside the whole time!  As far as the virus is concerned, the governor moved more control to the local counties this week.  This means that each county will determine how and when to reopen.  Most businesses are currently open, although with limitations in place.  Unfortunately, the Hillsboro Pool will be closed all summer, which is currently causing a big uproar...

Speaking of pools, we helped Grammy and Papa open theirs this week - an annual event!  We took the pool cover off, scrubbed and washed it, and got out the outdoor furniture to set around the yard.  This was by far the coolest day we've ever done this - I think!

We have definitely been enjoying our own produce, and since my broccoli was extremely early, we have enjoyed it without the fear of worms invading our meals!  I also cut my first head of cabbage for the summer, and our asparagus has been producing enough for 2-3 meals a week. A cool, wet spring, although not good for my mood, is just perfect for these early crops!

Caiden continues to work at the golf course a little more regularly - mowing and raking bunkers mostly!
I caught him in action while we were working at the pool.

On Thursday, I was really excited to watch the Spacex launch - the first launch from American soil in 10 years!  I watched on and off for 2 hours, and then with 16 minutes left until launch, they had to abort the whole thing because of weather.  Fast forward a few days, and their 2nd attempt was successful!  Cambry, Delaney, and I watched together, and it was so awesome!  There is just something about watching a space launch!  They say this is the beginning of a new era, where more people can fly into space.  I can assure you, I will never be on that list!

That was a pretty historic event, but the biggest news from the week is that Cambry turned l4! It was a very low-key celebration - just like she likes!  There were a few gifts from us and a visit from the grandparents and mentor.  I didn't realize how many people she shares a birthday with:  Mr. Taylor (her band teacher), Ivan (her great uncle across the road), and Lois and Alma (2 women from church - Lois called her in the morning).

She isn't sure about this high school thing, although she is happy with her first three hours:  band, yearbook, and art.  She is also being brave by agreeing to be a manager for the VB team. Cambry is definitely not in a hurry to grow up, and in some ways, we are grateful for that!  We hope that she can explore some unique opportunities during high school as she continues to discover her own unique gifts and abilities.   We love you, Cambry!

Pre-Christmas Surprise

On Dec. 22, I woke up to Caiden not feeling well. In fact, he said he hadn't ever felt the kind of pain he was experiencing that morning. Reluctantly, I made an appointment. Long story, short - it was good he complained because he ended up having his appendix out that afternoon! It must have been at the very beginning stages and thankfully hadn't burst. So, we were in and out of the hospital by midnight that night. Maybe the worst part about the whole thing is that his wisdom teeth surgery had to be postponed since it was supposed to be the very next week. He'll go back to school minus an appendix, but still having his wisdom teeth until February 16! Pre-op Post-op

League Champs!!

Delaney and her teammates had an amazing volleyball season! They ended the season undefeated in the Wheat State League, and they only lost 2 matches overall. They had a notable win over Moundridge, 2 wins over Elyria, and THREE wins over Little River - all teams we have had trouble with in the past. They were so fun to watch, working as a team and developing throughout the season, and they ended as the league tournament champs. Thanks to Raechel Boese and Tara Churchill for their work with these ladies. What a fantastic way to end Delaney's middle school volleyball days! Mid-Summer Happenings

I'm trying to remember that I craved "slow and easy" days during the school year, and I feel like that's what I've had this summer. It has been refreshing to wake up in the morning and have a flexible to-do list; although I have to admit that some days do feel long. I suppose that helps me appreciate my teaching job! In not particular order, here's what we've been up to: Endless fixing and revamping in the shop: Digging up potatoes and pulling up a generous onion crop! Look at the size of that potato! The 4th of July fireworks were outdone by the sky this year! Enjoying my walks at sunset: Many, many green beans to can and pickle. Thanks to the girls for cleaning and stemming them! I had been keeping tabs on an Oriole nest near the garden, and one Sunday, I witnessed the "fly-away!" It was a noisy affair as the parents and babies kept calling back and forth. I almost can't get over the fact that I had time to stand and watch the whole affair
