Stay-at-Home (Week 10) / Learn-at-Home (Week 8)

I guess "stay-at-home" isn't exactly correct anymore.  This week, we began in Phase 1.5, then moved to Phase 2 of reopening on Friday.  A lot of businesses were free to open up again on Friday, including movie theaters, bowling alleys, etc.  Groups of no larger than 15 are okay, but social distancing is still necessary.  Just tonight, I heard a report that 35% of all people diagnosed with Covid-19 are asymptomatic - spreading the disease without knowing it.  I guess this is why testing is so important.  We are continuing to stay at home as much as possible, but I feel a little freer to go out shopping for groceries, at least.

Caiden has been golfing A LOT at Papa's golf course, and last Sunday, he let us all tag along.  In fact, Chelan played with him, Noah, and Ty. This was the first time I have actually watched him play.  The girls took a few practice swings, too, for the first time.

School-wise, this was a big week - Tuesday was the last day of school for Caiden, Delaney, and me!  Hello summer!  It would have been the day for Cambry's 8th grade promotion as well, but instead, we watched the video she and her classmates put together and had s'mores in the backyard. It was actually a pretty nice way to celebrate!

I handed out my class 'awards' on Monday, and that felt like a good wrap-up.  It was fun to see their reactions as they learned who had been voted for which award.

Delaney's teacher, Mr. Krehbiel, celebrated his class that day by offering a free pizza from Keith's for each student.  We picked it up for supper, and she was able to say good-bye for the summer . . . we thought.  We found out later in the week that he actually retired!!  I guess he didn't want a lot of hype over it, and that really does fit his style pretty well.

Her own pizza!  Actually, we all enjoyed it!

Speaking of hype, we did celebrate Mr. Fast's and Ilona's retirements on Wednesday.  It was so good to see people again!!  The social committees from both buildings had gotten together to figure out a little recognition, and Kacie had the idea of having a 'drive-by good-bye!'  She also put together the gifts for them with the help of Ilona's class and the USD 411 staff.  She put a lot of work into them, and they turned out beautifully!  We are sad that Delaney will not get to experience having her great-aunt teach her next year, but we are happy for Ilona and the adventures that await her.  And Mr. Fast definitely deserves his retirement after working so hard for our school for 24 years!

On Saturday morning, the girls and I went to pick up 3 kittens since we are officially down to zero cats!  We are loving these new additions:  Chessie, Willow, and Smudge.  So far, Biscuit wants very little to do with them, but they are getting plenty of attention from the kids!

The basement got new lights this week thanks to Chelan's electrical skills.  Is there anything he can't do?  He continues to amaze me!  Now we wait for drywall.
Now, on to summer!

Pre-Christmas Surprise

On Dec. 22, I woke up to Caiden not feeling well. In fact, he said he hadn't ever felt the kind of pain he was experiencing that morning. Reluctantly, I made an appointment. Long story, short - it was good he complained because he ended up having his appendix out that afternoon! It must have been at the very beginning stages and thankfully hadn't burst. So, we were in and out of the hospital by midnight that night. Maybe the worst part about the whole thing is that his wisdom teeth surgery had to be postponed since it was supposed to be the very next week. He'll go back to school minus an appendix, but still having his wisdom teeth until February 16! Pre-op Post-op

Spring Art

While Mrs. Schmidt was away on maternity leave during the spring, Mr. Novak (from Hesston) filled in for her. Since Cambry has her first 3 class periods in the art room, she got to know him very well and he mentioned several times how he appreciated Cambry's artistic style and way of thinking. He even let her paint a little bit on his own pieces! Cambry took several pieces to the WSL art festival in April. She came home with a first place finish in the graphic design category and an honorable mention in the computer design category. We are so thankful for the instruction she has received over the last 4 years in Goessel. Now, on to Hesston College with Professor Cross!

July Highlights

July was a slow, meandering stroll through mid-summer. Slow as it was, there were some highlights: Lots of raspberries to pick - what a delight! Kenya continues to grow and learn how to take walks: Delaney loved her week at Camp Menno! Delaney and Jenna attended the KSU Volleyball camp: All 5 of us were in the SAME place at the SAME time to attend a beautiful wedding! Cambry found success at the Marion Co. Fair one last time with 4 purples and 1 red on her photos. Two of those purples turned into a Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion in her respective classes. Fun fact, as an assistant, she sat with her future art professor as he judged photos! Delaney and I were "guest readers" at the little kids' Splish Splash Party at church: Last but not least - the Paris Olympics started! We watched the opening ceremony at Vanessa's. I took an olympic flag fruit pizza to share with everyone: Next up: a busy month of transitions!
