Cousins' Day Out

My sister and I enjoyed a day out with two of our cousins last Thursday.  We have never done such a thing, but I'm starting to think that it should be an annual event!  I have a lot of cousins, but Erica and Tina were the only ones I grew up with on a daily basis - same school, same town, same church.  It was a delight to spend the day with them.

Anyway, Tina had heard about a winery near Paxico, KS (about halfway between Manhattan and Topeka).  I have probably had about 3 sips of wine in my entire life, so this was completely a new experience for me!  But before we got to the Prairie Fire Winery, we made a stop in Manhattan to eat lunch.  If I had to live anywhere else, my first pick would be Manhattan.  I've always been drawn to it - beautiful limestone buildings, the flint hills, K-State (of course).  There's just something about it!

We ate lunch in Aggieville at Rock-a-Belly Deli.  Good sandwiches!

Then, we walked down the block to "Varsity Donuts" for dessert.  Oh my - there are no words to describe this donut!!  Chocolate, peanut butter, cream cheese - all the good stuff.  And aren't the signs so cute?  I can't wait to go back there!

We then made our way to the winery and it felt like we were pulling up to someone's house.  I guess we kind of were - it is a working farm!  The views were beautiful, and the wine was good - I think.  I don't really know.  I do know that I found a wine for me - the sweetest one they make, called "Prairie Punch."  I also learned that a dry wine is one that is not as sweet.  I told you I didn't know anything!

Loved this label!
My pick!
It was a great day - and a much-needed day for me!  Thanks Vanessa, Tina, and Erica.  It was so good to spend the day with you!

Surprise!

Well, I sure don't get surprised very often, but Saturday night was a huge surprise to me! I thought I was heading to Hesston for an AGCO Christmas Dinner with Chelan. He told me we needed to drop something off at Ben and Tina's house (my cousin), first. Okay, no big deal! While we were there, Ben said they were about ready to go out for dinner, did we want to come along? Surprisingly, Chelan thought about it and wanted to do it (clue #1 that something was up). I kept saying that we couldn't skip out on his dinner, but Chelan insisted that going to Wichita for dinner would be much more fun. I even said, "This seems like something you had planned!" However, I'm always up for dinner in Wichita, so I agreed, reluctantly!! We enjoyed a meal at Hangar 1 Steakhouse and I thought that was the end of it. But, on the way home, Chelan asked if we could go by the new arena since the inaugural concert was there that night -- Brad Paisley! I thought it would be f...

Spring Art

While Mrs. Schmidt was away on maternity leave during the spring, Mr. Novak (from Hesston) filled in for her. Since Cambry has her first 3 class periods in the art room, she got to know him very well and he mentioned several times how he appreciated Cambry's artistic style and way of thinking. He even let her paint a little bit on his own pieces! Cambry took several pieces to the WSL art festival in April. She came home with a first place finish in the graphic design category and an honorable mention in the computer design category. We are so thankful for the instruction she has received over the last 4 years in Goessel. Now, on to Hesston College with Professor Cross!

Fall Daze

The Fall Semester zoomed by as usual with lots of activities - mostly volleyball. However, there were some other events we enjoyed, too. Volleyball-wise, Delaney had a great first season! The team placed first at their home tournament, at the Olpe tournament, they were regional champions and sub-state runners-up (losing to Little River...again), and they finished 2nd in the league. Individually, Delaney made it onto the all-league first team and was a state stat leader (top 25) in serving! Our community continued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our ancestors coming to the area. We toured the site of the first immigrant houses while Delaney helped to park cars with the youth group. Delaney was a care bear with her friends for Halloween. She was also in her first musical: The Little Mermaid. She played the roles of a princess and a maid. Overall, she enjoyed it, despite lots of practices! We thoroughly enjoyed the performance and I still marvel at what can be accomplished at a ...
