This past weekend, we loaded up the van and headed to Manhattan (again)! This time, for a men's basketball game vs. Oklahoma State. We were not disappointed! Remarkably, we were all healthy, we had good seats, the game was super-exciting, and Delaney got chosen to go down on the floor during halftime for a "Small Slams Dunking Contest!" (more on that below)

We 3 girls went to the photo booth - a highlight for both of them! |

I wasn't sure if she would really do it, but she had one brief, brave moment and decided to give it a try. So, right before halftime, she and the other 8 or 9 kids went down to "practice" in the tunnel (right by the locker rooms). Delaney was definitely IN when she realized that a real live cheerleader would be helping her out on the court.

Halftime came and out they marched - oblivious to the fact that there were about 12,000 people watching! She couldn't reach the rim to dunk it, so she shot the ball instead. She missed, but the cheerleader swooped her up and then she dunked it! Willie the Wildcat didn't pick her dunk as the winner, but she didn't seem to care - probably because she really didn't know what was going on!

The slam - with a little bit of help! |
We were proud of her for being brave enough to go out there. I'm pretty sure I never would have done that!
After a big Wildcat win, we headed outside - and it was snowing! We checked into our hotel (which Cambry had wanted to do since about 15:00 left to go in the first half), and then ate at Vista Burger. Chelan and I have good memories of this place as both of our families used to eat there on trips up to K-State. It turns out that our kids loved it - Cambry wanted to go back on Sunday to eat lunch there!
Next up was swimming. Swimming while it's snowing outside is pretty awesome! Bedtime snacks are also mandatory on a vacation, I think. Applesauce in bed? Why not!
Sunday morning, we ate breakfast, swam a little more (while I did some reading - yes!), and then headed to Manhattan Mennonite Church. Chelan attended there when he was a student at K-State. It's a small congregation, and some of the members even recognized him all these years later! We got to participate in communion as a family - the children could receive communion if they were ready or a small wafer and a blessing from the pastor. This was something new to us and Chelan and I decided this was a special way to include our kids, who haven't made that big decision yet. It felt good to be up there together rather than leaving them behind in the pew to wonder what we were doing. I think Chelan enjoyed introducing all of us to this part of his history!
All in all - a successful trip with good memories made!
