Last weekend, Delaney, Cambry, and I headed up to Manhattan with my sister, my niece, and my mom - a girls' weekend! Addison had a swim meet up there (she's a super-great swimmer and she totally loves it), so we tagged along. Some of the highlights included:
1. Watching Addi swim. There was a lot of waiting involved, but the atmosphere of a swim meet was interesting to take in. Thank goodness the weather was nice because the pool area was HOT and HUMID!

Acting silly before her first race (and a little nervous, too) |
2. Playing on the old K-State football field right next door to the swimming pool. That field was busy all weekend - kids playing on it, college kids playing rugby, high school bands participating in a band festival, and even fraternity and sorority houses learning dances and routines for homecoming week (I think). There was a lot of people watching!
3. Exploring the K-State Botanical Gardens and Insect Zoo. I didn't know that all existed, but it was fun to look around. The girls were very fond of all the sculptures and fountains around the garden.

The gardens surround the old dairy barn on campus |

a Purple Hydrangea! |

I like the giant ants crawling up the wall! |
4. K-State Volleyball game on Saturday night - they won in three! Ahearn Fieldhouse (where they play volleyball) was also right next to the swimming pool - so convenient.
5. Staying in a hotel. This was the girls' favorite part because they got to go swimming, of course. They waited all day on Saturday to get there, but we didn't arrive until after 9 p.m. The swimming had to wait until Sunday morning. This hotel happened to be situated about 100 yards from a railroad track. Three times during the night we were startled when a train would come through - practically shaking us out of our beds!
6. Manhattan's Sunset Zoo - a beautiful zoo nestled in the hills of Manhattan. We were visiting on their special Halloween weekend. This meant lots of kids in Halloween costumes filling buckets and bags with candy. I could have done without all the hoopla - and actually, the girls were more excited about finding candy than they were about looking at the animals. That was kind of annoying - maybe we'll go back on a quieter weekend someday!

This Gibbon was fun to watch! |

She got to decorate her own sticker at one of the candy stations |
It was fun and exhausting all at the same time. However, I knew we had a pretty successful weekend when, upon arriving home, the girls were in tears because they "miss Manhattan so much!"
Really a nice weekend in the company of girls only. Sometimes it is nice to be among us.
I was amused to read that the train scared you!
I grew up near the railroad, (aged 9 to 20 when I got married) and the first time, I also woke up with a start when I heard him coming.
Today, however, I remember with nostalgia ....
Greetings to all, hello!
