Summer Days

Some random thoughts and pictures from the last few days:

1.  I go through at least 2 to 3 tea towels a day sopping up spills.  Delaney decided she's old enough to drink WATER ("wah wah") from a big cup.  She's not the only one who spills, though.  I think I've figured out that with 3 children, there are always going to be spills to clean up after.  I don't really have the patience for it.

2.  I made something called "Magical Coffee" this morning.  Let me tell you - it truly was "magical!"  I like coffee, but I have to put stuff in it.  This was perfect - iced, too!  I had pinned the recipe on one of my boards in Pinterest and I think it comes from a website called "Food52."  Anyway, I started last night and combined 2/3 c. ground coffee with 3 c. water, 1 t. cinnamon, and 3 T. brown sugar.  It set all night in the refrigerator, and this morning I strained it a couple of times.  Then, I combined it with ice and cream (because I actually had some - I'm pretty sure milk would be just great, too).  It was the perfect combination of flavors for me!

3.  Besides drinking from a big cup, Delaney has also decided that she's: a.  old enough to set the table and b.  she's old enough to swing in a big swing.   She likes to go high and keeps saying, "Push you, push you" when I'm supposed to push her.  Setting the table also involves walking on the table - it just does.  And, I let her - it's actually pretty helpful when I'm trying to finish up supper!  Would I ever have let Caiden do this?  No - it's amazing how having 3 kids changes things.

4.   Caiden ran out of books to read and we aren't going to the library until tomorrow.  So, yesterday, I remembered that in my teaching things, I had a box of books.  It was like Christmas for all of us!  Among them were 4 Matt Christopher books - perfect for a 3rd grade sports-loving boy!  I also discovered my Shel Silverstein books (love his poems - and the kids do, too)!

5.  Caiden had friends over yesterday to play.  It was a glorious morning - they played so well together.  They even looked a little alike (see picture - glasses, cut-off shirts).  There was also a monumental event during the morning.  They wanted to play Monopoly Jr. and Cambry wanted to play, too.  I was expecting things like, "No, you can't play!" or "We don't want you to play!"  Instead, I heard 4 amazing words come out of Caiden's mouth, "Let her play, guys!"   WHAT?  If you know Caiden, you know how truly amazing that was!  Maybe we're making progress after all!

6.  Chelan had Caiden help him with the new corn header the other night.  Well, it's not new, but it's new to us.  Caiden takes these requests seriously - I think he's kind of proud when his dad asks him to help with farm things.  We're going to start cutting corn this week  - this doesn't usually happen until the end of August (or something like that).  Again, something else happening a month ahead of schedule!

7.  While Caiden had friends over, I whipped a batch of "ooblek" (cornstarch and water) for the girls.  It was quite messy and quite fun.  It's still amazing for even me to see it be a liquid and a solid all at the same time.  Washing off with the hose was mandatory!

8.  Delaney has recently showed interested in watching "Curious George."  She also likes to sing the song from "The Cat in the Hat" -- go, go, go, on venture!  (Here we go, go, go, go, on an adventure . .) She'll be 2 in just a couple of weeks!  I haven't really thought much about her birthday, but I guess I better start!

  1. O boy - you forgot to mention that Delaney's setting the table in only a diaper! LOL
So glad you remembered your box of books - that would be like Christmas!
Didn't know Timothy and Jacob both wear glasses. I bet Cambry felt pretty good when she was invited to play!

Surprise!

Well, I sure don't get surprised very often, but Saturday night was a huge surprise to me! I thought I was heading to Hesston for an AGCO Christmas Dinner with Chelan. He told me we needed to drop something off at Ben and Tina's house (my cousin), first. Okay, no big deal! While we were there, Ben said they were about ready to go out for dinner, did we want to come along? Surprisingly, Chelan thought about it and wanted to do it (clue #1 that something was up). I kept saying that we couldn't skip out on his dinner, but Chelan insisted that going to Wichita for dinner would be much more fun. I even said, "This seems like something you had planned!" However, I'm always up for dinner in Wichita, so I agreed, reluctantly!! We enjoyed a meal at Hangar 1 Steakhouse and I thought that was the end of it. But, on the way home, Chelan asked if we could go by the new arena since the inaugural concert was there that night -- Brad Paisley! I thought it would be f...

Spring Art

While Mrs. Schmidt was away on maternity leave during the spring, Mr. Novak (from Hesston) filled in for her. Since Cambry has her first 3 class periods in the art room, she got to know him very well and he mentioned several times how he appreciated Cambry's artistic style and way of thinking. He even let her paint a little bit on his own pieces! Cambry took several pieces to the WSL art festival in April. She came home with a first place finish in the graphic design category and an honorable mention in the computer design category. We are so thankful for the instruction she has received over the last 4 years in Goessel. Now, on to Hesston College with Professor Cross!

Choosing Trust Over Fear

I have struggled with writing about the shooting in Hesston - in fact, I wasn't going to post anything about it.  However, for the sake of memories, I decided I should at least touch on it.  It does deserve a place. It just hit so close to home - particularly since Doug was directly involved.  Honestly, I sometimes feel guilty for struggling with this tragedy.  I wasn't there, I didn't lose anyone close to me, and, although I know a few people who work there, I didn't know any of the victims.  And I get to move on with my life with little disruption.  I feel like I am on the outside looking in.   But I guess that's okay.  I didn't have to be directly involved for this to touch me.  My heart is sad for the families of those who died, for those who were injured, for those who witnessed it, for my brother-in-law who will probably replay images over and over, for my sister and my niece and nephew who might sometimes wonder "what if?", for th...
