On Thursday evening, the kids and I were outside getting ready to hit baseballs. I had to go do some watering in the garden (of course) before we could get started. I didn't get very far with that project because all of a sudden Cambry began screaming!
I knew it would be bad because I figured a bat had been involved - and it was pretty ugly! Cambry's figer had a gaping wide gash in it by the fingernail and one fingernail was bent backwards.
Chelan was not home.
He was on his way home from a work trip to Nebraska.
I am not good in these situations.
I do not know what requires immediate care and what doesn't.
I'm not even a very good consoler.
There is a reason I am not a nurse.
Our good friend Pat is, however. And here's a plus, he's practically our neighbor!
He was kind enough to come take a look at it. He did a great job of cleaning it up and bandaging it nicely - we decided not to go in with it, especially since Chelan wasn't around.
The next day we took off her bandage so Chelan could take a look. With her finger still swollen, and the gash still wide open, and with a trip to CA coming up in 6 days, we decided to take her in. The result? A broken fingertip and the possibility of stitches the next day. I have to be honest, I really wasn't expecting a broken finger. The good news is that they don't repair these kinds of breaks. The doctor told me it will heal on its own, or it may not. Either way, it won't matter a whole lot - go figure!
She did get 3 stitches in the gash and she handled it very well. She's been so brave throughout this whole thing! While we were in the room, I told her about the stitches I had when I was 5 (or so). Ironically, it was Pat who swung a tennis racket and hit me in the forehead. I can't remember how many stitches I had, but I do remember the burning of the numbing medicine and I can still feel the scar!
I wonder how many more incidents there will be like this?! With three kids, I'm sure there will be plenty more trips to the doctor like this!
Cambry affectionately named this character "Nogey" She carried it around with her everywhere the next day. Pat made it for her before he left!
